For two decades, ranking meant winning a spot on a results page a human would scroll through. Increasingly, that human never sees a results page at all — an AI Overview or a chat assistant answers the question directly, citing a small number of sources.
What Actually Changed
Generative engines don’t rank ten blue links — they synthesise an answer and choose who to cite. That shifts the goal from "rank #1" to "be the source the model trusts enough to quote." The inputs are still mostly the same signals search engines have valued for years: clear structure, authoritative sourcing, and content that directly answers the question asked.
Writing for Machines That Read, Not Just Crawl
The practical shift is in how content is structured. Direct-answer paragraphs near the top of a page, clearly labelled sections, and specific numbers/claims that can be lifted cleanly all make content easier for a model to extract and attribute correctly.
- Lead with the direct answer, then explain the reasoning — not the reverse.
- Use descriptive headings a model (and a human skimming) can parse at a glance.
- Back claims with specific numbers and sources instead of vague superlatives.
- Keep schema markup (FAQ, Article, Organization) accurate and current.
